Make a difference in Africa

  • Aug 4, 2008
  • Post a comment

Although our volunteers are always amazed by how much they experience and learn during their gap year travels in Africa, most are even more amazed at what they learn about themselves during their unique African encounter.

Our ultimate aim is to provide a safe and supervised environment within which travelers from abroad are able to make a tangible difference to wildlife and communities on the African continent, leaving you with a great sense of satisfaction and memories to last a lifetime!

More about the HIV/AIDS Medical & Clinic Assistance and Rural Community Work in South Africa

    MEDICAL PROGRAMME

In a city of contrasts, Cape Town's private sector health care and provision is extensive, but it is the rural communities that suffer from lack of facilities. Whilst there are some structures in place for an effective health service, there is an enormous deficit in terms of staff and resources. This is why the volunteers' help is very much appreciated by the nurses and doctors we work with.
As a volunteer, you will spend each morning of the week in the Masi clinic assisting the supervisors with the many people desperate for help. There are many sick little children, whose only support and help is through these clinics. This clinic runs from 8-12.30 daily.
This will give you the chance to make a positive impact on the health service in these areas on the outskirts of Cape Town, and to make a profound difference in the lives of the surrounding community.
Qualified volunteers are required, whether it is a doctor, nurse, EMT or a person trained in first aid.
Furthermore, volunteers would be able to offer advice to the day cares and after cares that they will be working with in the afternoon. There are many kids with special needs.

    COMMUNITY PROJECT
After having spent the morning at one of the clinics that we are involved with, you will help out the local community in different areas in the afternoon. You will rotate between the following community projects:

Build and Paint Schools/Extra mural involvement and reading programme
Schools in Red Hill deal with a great shortage of classrooms and facilities, as a result of which they are limited to the amount of children they can take. As a volunteer, you will help with fixing fences and windows, rebuilding and painting. It is hard, but highly rewarding work! In addition, we refurbish and paint existing classrooms and containers. (We are also able to offer older/less physically able volunteers lighter work, so that we can accommodate for all of you!)

    Masakhane Educare Centre in Masiphumelele
115 kids, 7 teachers. About 15 minutes drive from Red Hill Community

Volunteers will assist teachers with the afternoon after care by helping to serve meals, playing with the kids, reading both one on one and story time and with any other skills they have i.e. art, music and dancing.
Volunteers with adult skills such as computer, administration, financial or training can also add huge value to the teachers lives.

Masakhane was started as a Care Centre in 1992 by the Valley Development Project (VDP) operating out of a dilapidated bungalow and shipping containers in Masiphumelele, Cape Town.
Against the backdrop of displaced communities, poverty, HIV/AIDS, unemployment and social decay, the VDP aims to foster healthy self-reliant and sustainable communities.
Masakhane provides an oasis for local children surviving in difficult circumstances. However the Centre was severely under-resourced and struggled to provide a meaningful education.
With community involvement, Masakhane has become a vibrant pre-school boasting a fully equipped school building with newly acquired furniture, classroom and office equipment, and quality educational material. We accommodate 115 happy children in five classes: two toddler classes and two pre-school classes.

“Masakhane is about the community taking responsibility for their own upliftment and participating in the governing of their own lives… It is about empowering ourselves by creating good working relations between government structures, sponsors and communities for the benefit of everybody” Nelson Mandela 14 October 1998

African Impact Launches Medical Volunteer Project in St. Lucia, South Africa

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA, November 12, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- African Impact has launched a Medical Assistance and HIV / AIDS Awareness Project in St. Lucia, South Africa, which will begin operating at the beginning of January 2009.

This volunteer project gives international travellers the chance to work at a local medical clinic, and to provide sick and underprivileged people with medical assistance in their homes. The clinic struggles to consult all of the patients each day, as it supports a vast rural community, and volunteers' support is, therefore, very valuable.

Volunteers will assist in areas such as the children's clinic, the antenatal clinic, registration of patients, and the family planning department. Volunteers are never required to make decisions regarding treatments, but their presence and assistance is so appreciated. On some occasions, volunteers will join Home Carers when they visit sick people, unable to get to the clinic, at their homes. Volunteers will assist by preparing food for the patients, and administering their medication.

In addition, volunteers on the project will be involved in
• HIV / AIDS awareness education
• Refurbishment of clinics
• Farming projects
• Community social projects

During HIV / AIDS courses, which are open to anyone in the local community to attend, African Impact's volunteers raise awareness about the virus using a UN approved method. A huge proportion of the community is affected by HIV / AIDS and there are a number of prevailing stigmas surrounding the virus, which this awareness course aims to break down.

Also, volunteers may be involved in painting and / or refurbishing run-down clinics, and encouraging the local community to participate in sustainable development by growing and eating vegetables from farming projects. In participating in this project, volunteers can be assured that their contribution to this local community will be a very positive and important one. A lady who volunteered at the St. Lucia Teaching Project described her experience as such: "I think the aims and objectives of the program are absolutely wonderful, a life-changing experience with so many feel-good factors that I will take with me for a very long time."

The cost of a 4 week placement on the Medical Assistance and HIV / AIDS Awareness Project is: GBP 1295 or USD 2590. The project fee includes accommodation, all meals, all daily transport, materials and equipment for refurbishment / building work, and 24-hour in country support from the African Impact coordinators.

African Impact - http://www.africanimpact.com - began working in the communities surrounding St. Lucia in September 2007 and are involved in conservation education, orphan day care, teaching, as well as building and painting projects. This new project aims to further benefit and improve the lives of the local rural community in St. Lucia.
